Gawd, any Swervedriver fans out there? Another really cool band that got shelved once on a major. Adam Franklin, lead singer/guitarist of swervie, is now frontman of a band called Toshack Highway, as swervie disbanded last year. They've had 4 really great releases, a long string of singles with some of thier better neater songs on them. They would pack Chicago's Metro everytime they came through, which, on average was every 3 years. Pretty shoegazer, brit (but not atypical brit, they were just from there) music. Gowd, the diversity and all around beauty in their music changed my viewpoint of music forever. Anyone feel the same?

Oh yes, i can't forget, the genius of Alan Moulder, who has produced a long list of British shoegazer bands, like Catherine Wheel, god Im blank now as to the bands. Others with info on Swervie or Alan Moulder, plop it down on this page, I need to be refreshed with the info.

Yeah, Swervedriver were great (especially the Ejector Seat Reservation album that wasn't released in the states, as they were screwed over by their label), but I don't think they've actually disbanded. I know Adam Franklin has been playing with Toshack and doing some solo acoustic shows, but Swervedriver are, from what I hear in Big Takeover, still together. Other than The Auteurs and Catherine Wheel, there probably isn't a better b-sides band out there.

Swervedriver's Mezcal Head is on my top ten list of all time. I think I agree with Ben, from what I've read from a couple different sources Swervedriver haven't officially called it quits.

www.swervedriver.com and www.swervie.com have helped me keep "semi" up-to-date on the band... the former being a bit more current.

Raise is in my top five. "Deep Seat" takes the crown.

You close my eyes without blinking You read my thoughts without thinking You sit and smile and I'm sinking Could be the cause of my drinking You fabricate what I'm feeling You rise up riled and I'm reeling I swallow salt and you're kneeling We lie and stare at the ceiling You close my eyes and I'm drinking You read my thoughts and I'm blinking You sit and smile and I'm thinking Could be the cause of my sinking

Toshack Highway is very instrumental, sample-laden and certainly continues Adam's penchant towards sonic layering of sounds, effects and loops.

A bit less shoegazing and more "texturized". I'd suggest giving it a listen to see for yourself. My limited musical vocabulary won't do it justice.

It's an experimental derivative of Swervedriver... and certainly similar in many respects to 99th Dream.

I am a big Swervedriver fan as well. "Ejector Seat..." is probably my favorite as well. I agree about their B-sides. I wish I could find more of their singles.

Supposedly they are just taking a break, but we all know what that usually means.

A.Moulder's biggest achievement is arguably his work with My Bloody Valentine, particularly on the (still) astounding "loveless" Lp. His nadir has to be involvement with the spectacularly hyped ,Eurythmics in all but name duo, Curve You will indeed find his name on the majority of those bourgeois noise floppy fringe records from the early 90's,it seems.Swervedriver being a good antidote to the nonsenses therein. I saw Swervedriver in a huge ARENA type venue in Glasgow supporting the v.tiresome Wonderstuff!!! They were great but the crusties disliked the lack of fiddles and gave them the cold shoulder... hell...

Seth, there was a time you could find any and all b-side Swervedriver stuff on napster, but, unfortunately as we all know, that day is done. I guess alot of people collect those sorts of things for the packaging, as well as the audio. It doesn't matter to me, as long as I can hear it well.

Oh, oops. I wasn't done and I hit finish.... I don't think Swervie would be mad, as most of the singles, e.p's and b-sides were British imports, and most have also been out of print for almost 10 years. How else could I get a hold of them? I search the used record store here in Wicker Park, Chicago and they have everything......but that.

I also have most of the non-LP tracks by Swervedriver, as well as Lush if anyone's interested in trading. Check out Audio Galaxy- great filesharing sight.

Mezcal Head is one of my all time favorite albums. I completely love the overall consistency of the sound. A mixture of airy and dense sound production.

I saw them a couple years back, and they put on an incredible show.

So does anyone know for sure what's going on with them? Was 99th Dream the last we will ever hear of Swerevdriver?

I saw Adam Franklin do a solo gig in L.A. last month, and my friend overheard him telling someone that the band is still together, but they're taking a break.

The strange thing about Adam Franklin I recently discovered is that he's from an extremely wealthy family, though he lived on the streets ocassionally while in his discovery days of swervedriver. I'm not saying anything is wrong with that, I was just thrown for a loop on that one. Bye for now.

just another rich boy rock band, like idaho. what is the connection between wealth and music that takes forever to go nowhere?

They have the freedom to express in thier own way, and most big labels and consumers cant relate to real emotions anyhow, just trendiness and pretentiousness. Fortunately the wealth allows them to be free from the chains most labels bind artists in, and in this way, beautiful music is made.

I realize I'm almost a whole decade late for this particular thread, haha! - which I think is the main reason I can't resist replying to it - but I'd like to set the record straight:

I WISH I was from a fantastically wealthy family but I'm not. I have also NEVER lived on the streets! Where do people get this stuff from??!

I did however hear that since this thread JK has married his Aunt Claudette, a one-legged ex-firefighter from Reno and now lives with her in a grotto at the North Pole with Santa Claus. Not that's there's anything wrong with that...

But thanks for the kind comments made at the turn of the centrury!

Adam

Ha! That's funny. But doesn't answer the question...does Adam Franklin listen to Idaho?

A friend pointed out the musical similarities at a Bolts of Melody show a few years back. If nothing else, it would be a good double bill for a tour.

This thread also made me sad...audiogalaxy RIP.
